How can sounds be transformed into patterns and materials?

And how can they be played back?

I investigated a way to design patterns and material collages on the basis of sounds by both a very personal definition and a technical approach. With the help of self-built tools I am able to reveal certain characteristics of the materials and designs and make them auditorily perceptible – depending on the light reflection of the surface and/or the transparency of the material a pre-generated sound is changed in its pitch or volume.

Alongside the terms ‚white noise, sound pattern, rhythm and composition‘, I explored an area between material, form and sound in both technological and poetic ways. I followed my personal drawing/design style and investigated in which ways it could correspond to sounds and noises.

The final designs are material collages. Some have a large print as a noise-background. On top I built individual players with embroidered patterns, paper cut-outs or machine-sewn drawings. During the making process my aesthetic judgment resumes control.

The sound-scanner is a form of (musical) instrument that I invented and customised for playing the SHHH…designs. The electronics are based on an Arduino code by Peter Knight.
